- although Katniss is by no means a bad person (in her view) or has evil motivations it's her actions that speak differently. What Katniss does is survive, and sometimes that means doing so any way possible. Why? It's not simply to live but so that others can - or specifically her sister, Prim. Originally Katniss hunts to feed her family, and after Prim is picked in the reaping of the Hunger Games Katniss volunteers, because there is a chance that she could win, but either way it means that Prim is alive. It's what happens during the Hunger Games that changes things just from survival. She's always despised the Games, for what they are, but during them Katniss's open refusal to participate and her actions fighting against them (and in turn making President Snow look a fool) start something else - they cause others to die because her actions start a rebellion. Although Katniss has to kill to survive within the Games it's the ripple effect from what she does, and her lack of apparent care of what her actions has done (at least at the end of the 74th Hunger Games, from what she says to Haymitch) that is making me place her as an inmate - Katniss doesn't see what her actions are doing, and she should. Although there are instances which do show Katniss what her actions have lead to (the shooting in District 11, the bombing of District 12 and later Peeta's hijacking) it doesn't fully sink in with her, and she sees President Snow and the Capitol as the bad people in this
Abilities/Powers:
- ABILITIES:
- - hunting
- from a young age Katniss was taken into the woods by her father and was shown how to hunt, gaining the abilities and skills to use a bow and the knowledge in how to track animals. tAfter her father died Katniss improved on these skills, becoming a provider for her family. The use of a bow was also what gained Katniss a high score from the gamemakers and helps in her survival during the games
- due to participating in the Hunger Games Katniss had to learn how to survive, something which she had a helping hand in due to her skills in hunting and having to provide food for her family at home. During preparation for the Hunger Games Katniss also learned how to set traps and make better fires, and the ability to climb trees also helped her stay off the ground and out of sight
- although singing reminds Katniss of her father, and makes her sad, Katniss is told that she is a good singer - she has been asked previously to sing in school assemblies and her singing causes Mockingjay's to stop and listen
- Katniss is knowledgeable in medicinal herbs and plantlife and during the Hunger Games was able to identify berries that Peeta had found as being Nightlock just on sight. Due to her mother being a healer and her father training her to hunt this has given Katniss decent knowldge of plantlife, and her mother's healing skills have taught her a little extra (even if she isn't much of a healer). Katniss is also rather smart and logical, when her feelings don't conflict her
Personality:
- Katniss is incredibly strong, both physically and emotionally. After her father died and her mother withdrew due to grief Katniss took on everything that her parents were supposed to do along with continuing her own education. Although Katniss and Prim, her sister, were already close Katniss became a stronger source of support for Prim, someone that the younger girl could always rely on whether for emotional needs or for food. Even though the death of her father was something that hurt Katniss, the pain and sadness that she felt was something that she kept hidden from Prim, grieving privately to let the young girl see her happy, so that she could also be happy. Whenever the time for the reaping for the Hunger Games came around Katniss had to be especially strong, and had to hope and believe that she wouldn't be chosen, that she would still be there for her family. When Prim's first games came around Katniss comforted the young girl, reassuring and silencing her fears about being chosen at the reaping. When Prim was in the end chosen Katniss volunteered herself as tribute for the Hunger Games - although she knew the possibility that she could die she volunteered herself to save Prim, to protect the young girl and her mother, something that everyone else saw as bravery. When preparing for the games and even inside them Katniss shows further bravery, refusing to let the fear and possibility of death dissuade her from believing that she has a chance of winning, particularly when Haymitch tells her that she should get used to the fact that she will die. Katniss' refusal to give in and her determination is one reason why she progressed so far (and even won) the games - she refused to die and let a nie impossible situation beat her.
Katniss is incredibly resourceful, shown first in her ability to survive in District 12 (one of the poorer Districts of Panem) but also in her ability to survive during the Hunger Games. After her father died and Katniss became a provider for her family she had to find a way to keep them alive, although this meant doing so through illegal means it didn't stop Katniss - her family outweighed the risks. Katniss improved on the hunting skills that her father had taught her, venturing out past the borders of District 12 to hunt, to trade in the Hob and to give her family food. Inside the Hunger Games Katniss first found herself able to survive by hiding, by getting out of the way of the other tributes that were hunting her by staying in a tree - something that kept her unnoticed to them when they passed her location. Katniss' resourcefulness works well with her determination - she is determined to find ways of doing things when they seem impossible, for example when Seneca Crane and the other game officials were ignoring her during her 'show' Katniss changed her tactics, shooting an arrow into the apple of a pig they were about to eat rather than at her actual target - her determination to be noticed and her resourcefulness in finding a way of doing so helped her earn a high score, and a respect from Seneca Crane.
One thing to note about Katniss is that she isn't a people person and doesn't make friends easily. Haymitch has described her as arrogant and her temper often gets the better of her (for example when the game officials were ignoring her). When asking Haymitch how to get sponsors in the arena he comments that people need to like her, something that he is also quick to note that she isn't doing very well on. Katniss however defies this when she meets Cinna, her stylist for the games. They quickly build up a pleasant rappor, one akin to friendship and they mutually share confidence and belief in each other - Katniss believes in him and what he can do and Cinna believes that she can win. When interviewing with Caeser Flickerman Katniss speaks with Cinna beforehand, showing nerves and uncertainty in the situation - she doesn't find it easy to relax around people and simply talk and due to the sponsors seeing the interview she's worried about how it will reflect. Cinna rebuffs this by saying that she had no problems getting him to like her, to which Katniss comments that it is because she wasn't trying. Katniss manages to pull off the interview and does so with grace and charm, as due to Cinna's advice she was ignoring everyone else and was pretending that she was talking to him.
Katniss is incredibly weary about the world around her due to the circumstances of her life, particularly the Hunger Games. Due to an uprising seventy-five years previously the twelve remaining districts of Panem have been placed in a yearly "Hunger Games", something where each year one young boy and girl (12-18) are sacrificed each year in a fight to the death as a reminder of the uprising and what came from it. The Hunger Games and what it means, or rather what it means to the districts rather than the Capitol, have made Katniss distrustful of authority. Although certain of the Peacekeepers in District 12 are lax on the rules there is always worry that others will come to District 12, ones that will treat Katniss (and Gale) harshly for their actions. Katniss' defiance of authority is shown many times throughout the games, firstly when she shoots an arrow through an apple near to the game officials, then by her refusal to participate in the games (by walking away from the other tributes until the Seneca Crane alters the field to send her back) and finally by her refusal to kill Peeta at the end of the 74th Hunger Games, telling him (and everyone else) that she would rather there be no victor than have to kill him - an action which forces Seneca Crane's hand and makes him end the games before they both die so that there is a victor. This, and Katniss' kindness towards Rue after she has died, starts an uprising in various Districts, showing to have consequences that Katniss didn't predicts. Although she originally seems unaffected and uncaring of what her actions have meant (and particularly because she annoyed President Snow and the Capital Officials) she later sees the consequences clearly when President Snow explains that she will suffer if she is unable to stop the fire that she has lit. Although she agrees to do this out of wishing to protect others she still finds disdain in having to do so, later becoming the Mockingjay (the symbol and face of the rebellion) when the uprising does start.
Although Katniss is not the best in social situations, usually only applied with regards to figures of authority, when Katniss does make a friend she is incredibly loyal and compassionate. After Katniss forms an alliance with Rue during the Hunger Games, due to Rue's helping her fend off the Career group and then helping her after she'd been stung by tracker jackers, Katniss is reminded of her sister by Rue due to the two young girls being similar. This, along with liking the girl and being grateful of her help, is why Katniss forms an alliance with her, protecting the young girl and working with her even though she knows that later she will have to kill her. When Rue is killed by Marvel (one of the Careers) Katniss covers her in flowers, honouring Rue as well as showing her anger at the Capitol, before giving her District 12's farewell gesture, something which is repeated across District 11. The same is repeated, although more intensely, with Peeta. Due to Peeta being from her district, and having helped her once before when she was in trouble, Katniss felt loyalty to him despite knowing that she may also have to kill him, and getting to know him better and him helping her be liked by the crowd and sponsors did little to help her feelings. After playing the 'star crossed lovers' role with Peeta, and after hearing that they may both be able to live, Katniss' loyalty is even greater - after just losing Rue Katniss refuses to also lose him and searches for him despite any harm that it may come to her. When the rules are reversed and it is announced that only one tribute may be crowned victor Katniss's loyalty (and her anger at the Capitol) is what causes Katniss to propose a double suicide to Peeta, so that they may both go home.
Although Katniss is strong she is also not without her troubles. Although she is confident this is sometimes a little too much and she has been described as arrogant. She also finds it difficult to get along with others, and particularly express how she feels (when Peeta tells her to say something after he describes when he first had a crush on her she replies "I'm not good at saying something"), although Peeta later helps her through this with his kindness, loyalty and willingness to do anything for her (causing real feelings to develop for him). Although Katniss prefers to show herself as strong and brave it does not prevent her from becoming nervous, something which is shown more leading up to the games than previously in her life. Katniss is also incredibly prideful; although she is modest about her hunting abilities she still has a lot of pride in herself, her District and what she can do, something which attributes to her arrogance. She is also incredibly argumentative, arguing with Peeta that he is just as good as she is (and refusing to believe that he doesn't have a chance at going home), which doesn't help with her disdain for the Capitol either.
Although she has had a lot of struggles in life due to the repression of the Districts from the Capitol and her family situation Katniss has refused to let this get to her and bring her down, reminding herself that she has people counting on her is one of the reasons that she continually goes on and refuses to give up - she promised to win the Hunger Games for Prim, to return to her and she made certain to. Katniss is a fighter and survivor, someone that refuses to dwell on past negativity and looks to what may come, although she doesn't believe that she has much of a future, particularly not after her participation in the Hunger Games and 'showing up' of the Capitol. She originally thinks little of those from the Capitol due to their lifestyles and love of the Hunger Games but some (particularly Effie, Cinna and her prep team) show her that not everyone thinks the same, something which earns her respect. Respect and trust are also important things to Katniss and although she isn't very readily trusting, earning her trust is something that is of great value - it can also earn you her protection and loyalty.
Barge Reactions:
- To say that Katniss will be unhappy about this is an understatement. To her it'll be of the Capitol's design, some new punishment for her and her actions. The Barge will be like an arena itself, with the changes from the floods and breaches being like anything else that the Game Makers do to alter the arena. It'll take a long time, if ever, for Katniss to not think that the Capitol has done this, and getting her to believe what this actually is (including the other character's abilities).
Katniss will be very resistant to the Barge and the people on it, keeping to herself and staying out of what she can - she doesn't have to involve herself if the Capitol drags her in to new things. Ports will be different, and her actions in them will differ depending on what they are and if they can do anything for her (and you can be she will definitely try to escape). It's safe to say that there will be a lot of denial coming from her, and stubborn beliefs and actions
Path to Redemption:
- Whomever would become paired with Katniss would have a long and challenging road ahead of her. Although Katniss is the most stubborn, and changing her beliefs and views (especially regarding the Capitol and President Snow, and that her actions have caused a lot of deaths in the rebellion) will be a very difficult road, this isn't to say that Katniss cannot be redeemed. Her actions start because she is trying to survive, and keep her family alive - especially Prim. Her sister is her world, and Katniss sacrificed her life so that Prim could live, in the end winning the Hunger Games for her just as she'd promised. If Prim is involved Katniss becomes a little less selfish, so working Prim into the redemption would be something for Katniss, something that could make her listen. This won't be immediate, due to the long road ahead. Not only is she stubborn but she's suspicious and lacks trust in others - it takes a lot for her to put enough trust in Haymitch to listen to him, and even in the Third Quarter Quell it takes even more signs for Katniss to again trust that Haymitch is there for her - and she only forms an alliance because of Haymitch, she doesn't (then) trust anyone else - they have to prove it.
Any warden for Katniss would also need to prove that she can trust them - and that she should. That would need to come before any help could happen. Additionally they would require a lot of patience, as well as having the ability to know when a good time to provoke her is and when to not (because the right provocation, even resulting in an outburst, could make her discover something - either in listening to her warden or her own reaction/words). There may not be one best person for her - the two that make the most progress with her are Cinna and Haymitch, and Peeta for some supporting help to the both. They all gain different reactions from her, each making her think about something and sometimes see something she'd missed before

Sample Journal Entry:
- video.
- [ It's a rare entry from Katniss but there's something that has made her think - made her remember. A normal person may have cried, although that isn't in Katniss's repetoire of responses - not for this. Although it is provoking it isn't enough to make her cry - part of it is a happy memory ]
There's a cat.
[ The image doesn't change from her to the cat, others have mentioned them before - the new breach brought them on board somehow. Well. The Capitol added them in ]
It's not hers [ She won't elaborate on who that is, but if she's ever mentioned Prim before that is the only person it could be ] but it's not better. [ Katniss isn't a fan of them ]
They're stupid. Like this. They won't kill you, unless it's a mutt. [ Which is highly likely, to her. It's why she's been watching it intently, ready and guarded ] They're just stupid. Not even worth skinning. [ Because who'd buy cat fur, really?
That's all her message gives. What else do you even want about a cat? Katniss would be glad that they're gone. It might have reminded her of Prim but now all she can think about is the stupid cat in her room. A stupid cat which the video is now on ]
Sample RP:
- A cat. Katniss had had more than enough experiences with them due to Buttercup. She'd tolerated it for her sister but she'd rather have put it back where it had walked in from, or killed it. It was loud, ugly and a nuisance. And loved, sadly. The cat in her room had appeared at the same time as the others on the barge had, although she hadn't needed to see or hear others complaining about it to know about it. It had woken her up. She'd barely been asleep but the stupid cat had taken that from her, and now it was sat on the floor watching her. Meowing at her.
She kept waiting for it to attack. It was a mutt, a Capitol creation, and she was here, in their playground. Katniss had been on the barge for a month. A month where she'd been waiting for it to change, or for someone to come and kill her. She didn't know why they were waiting. She was alone, at least in terms of the Victors, of everyone who'd been in the arena. Katniss didn't know anyone on the barge. Maybe they were from other Districts. Or maybe they were from the Capitol. They didn't look it, not from what she'd seen whilst she'd been there, but maybe this wasn't the same. If they were planning to kill her it would be obvious if they looked the part.
Although the fact that they were going to kill her was obvious anyway. The Districts had started rebelling. Haymitch had warned her that Snow wasn't impressed with her, from how she'd won the 74th Hunger Games throughout the Victory Tour. Snow blamed the rebellion on her, that it was her actions. She blamed it on him. He continued with the Hunger Games. He continued killing people. Now people were rebelling against the Capitol. Against him. If she had to die then she'd be their Mockingjay. But she'd die free. Herself. Just like Peeta had said.
